Straight router bit is the most basic type of router bit. It can be used to make number of woodworking cuts. Most common type of cut that are made using straight router bits are flat bottomed grooves. Different types of cuts that can be made with straight router bit.
Joint Making - Straight router bits are very useful in making variety of joints, among which most common are lap joints and mortise & tenon joints.
Edge-Cutting - Another very common type of task done with straight bit router is cutting and shaping of edges. For this task straight bit router requires the assistance of guide fence or jig. You can also cut along the edge without guide fence or jig, if your router bit is equipped with guide bearing or pin.
Plunge-cutting - When used with plunge routers, you can use straight router bit to make a cut into the surface of the material from above. If the straight router bit has plunge cutting tip, it can also be used like a drill bit, to create holes in the material for several purposes.
Lettering – One of the most innovative way of using straight router bit is teaming it up with templates for lettering. Smaller-diameter bits are more ideal for this purpose as they allow you to carve more complicated and detailed cuts.
